Dance little lady dance...

We had our work Christmas Party last night... a torturous drive up into the mountains only to discover on arriving at the Restaurant that they'd lost power!

So what was meant to be a 3 course meal with a DJ to dance the night away looked like turning out to be a bit different...

BUT... one of the reasons I love my work is people seem to be able to make the best of situations... we had candlelight all over including candles in the loo's so we could see what we were doing... and a cold entree, 130 warm dinners cooked on one small gas cooktop and purchased icecreams for dessert!

The disappointing thing was the lack of music... but when one couple got up onto the dance floor and started to dance to nothing... I said to one of my colleagues, what we should be doing is formation dancing like The Nutbush, Bus Stop etc. She said, I'm game if you are... so out we went and started to do the Nutbush and then within seconds had about a dozen girls up dancing in perfect harmony...

Next thing we know the DJ, doing a wonderfully inventive improv of his own, rigged up his ipod to his laptop and with the aid of the emergency evacuation megaphone we had music... tinny, distorted but music... and we were off!

I then spent the better part of the night dancing, at one point teaching some of the others basic belly dancing so we shimmied and wobbled across the floor... but the best part of the night was dancing with Ms. J... one of my workmates who is just totally gorgeous and insane. At one point I kissed her smack on the lips and said I love you as you make me feel pretty normal in comparison to your antics. Ms.J. has a basic style of dance... dorky ala Kath and Kel! And she gets into it with such gusto that she had us all doing it... though she was the only one regularly flashing her knickers.

At one point the only 4 people left on the dance floor making monkeys of ourselves were myself, Ms. J. and 2 other work colleagues and we let it rip... bogan dancing to AC/DCs you shook me all night long. When a disapproving person made some wisecrack to my boss... she came up and joined us, much to the amusement of the majority of the others...

Am paying for it today... can barely move... but gee it was worth it... I had the bestest time...

For those of you not familiar with Kath and Kel just watch this, and watch Kath (silver permed foxy lady) to get an idea of what Ms. J and the rest of us got up to!

Things I have learned... in no particular order of importance...

  • Drooling and dribbling and sighing 'oh my god, look at the size of his hands' is probably not the most appropriate response when being introduced to the very cute, but very young (28) new guy at work...
  • I am not much of a team player... I love working as part of a team, as long as no-one else is doing MY job...
  • I do not delegate well...
  • Working 10-12 hours days for 3 weeks in a row in order to have a week off kinda defeats the purpose of having a holiday...
  • Particularly when you then go back to working 10-12 hour days on your return...
  • Telling men that you need to mother-proof your house prior to a visit has them thinking of p0rn and a drawerful of goodies... and their eyes glaze over...
  • As does telling them that you are going on a d1ck-free weekend with your girlfriends...
  • Having slightly hairy legs on a girls away weekend is probably better than attempting to shave said legs at midnight in the bathtub when you've spent the previous 48 hours doped up to the gills due to back spasm...
  • Legs bleed a lot...
  • Starting belly dancing lessons is probably not the smartest thing to do when you are in the middle of a full blown fibromyalgia episode...
  • People think it's funny that the one body part that gets injured after belly dancing lesson number one is your ANKLE...
  • Keeping quiet about the boobage and bum cramp after your first belly dancing lesson is probably not a bad thing...
  • Men, want to talk to me and feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings with me, which is lovely...
  • Feeling comfortable enough to shut up and just jump my bones on occasion would be even lovelier...
  • Despite the fact that I often make reference to being a little fat girl, and my humour is self-deprecating, I actually like myself, a lot...
  • Which is probably just as well, as it becomes clearer every day that my world and the rest of the planet are often slightly out of kilter and it's likely to be a long while before a lovely man tells me to shut up and jumps my bones...
  • Just as well I'm an optimist... someday my prince will come... sigh!

Sorry... you know what they say... if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all... well... that's why I've been so quiet...

And the Dorks shall inherit the earth...

The wonderful Rhian has created a new award, and I'm lucky enough to be one of the first recipients,

Now some of you may be wondering about what makes me so special, but of course, this is not my only claim to dorkiness... I'm such a uber-dork I have my own categories.

Dancing...
There's the How I was a Human Bowling Ball and lived to tell the Tale...story that was my award winning entry.

And there was my tapdancing debut. Do you remember The Village People's Do the Shake? Now, imagine a 38 year old, little fat girl, dressed as a cow, tapdancing badly to this song. We stomped onto the stage, and at one point I was so nervous, that I had disorientated myself, and instead of ending up with the rest of the troops at the back of the stage, I had moved forward, so doing an involuntary solo... another couple of missteps and I would have gone over the edge of the stage!

Year two wasn't any better... doing a gangster/ showgirl routine to Madonna's Hanky Panky. Except, I'm not showgirl material, so instead of a gold, tinselly sexpot I looked like a gold, tinselly sausage... crammed into a dress that shed all day in a major heatwave in a theatre without air-conditioning. That was ok... but a fellow dancemate and I, losing our place, and jumping 2 verses ahead of everyone else wasn't... and with my teacher's mantra running through my head of whatever you do, don't stop dancing... I made up my own little interpretive dance that was a mix of Shirley Temple and whirling dervish.

Fashion...
Those of you who have been reading the Tales of Miss Frou Frou from the beginning will be familiar with one of my earliest posts about my various fashion faux pas...

Dating and Food...
Sigh... I'm the girl who always manages to miss her mouth when eating and trying to make an impression. Two examples that spring to mind, going to take a drink out of a megacup of Coke at the movies on a date once and squeezing the cup just a little too hard and ending up with half the cup in my cleavage.... or even more embarrassing, laughing at a date's joke just as I took a sip of hot chocolate and ending up spraying it out my nose... and no, surprise, surprise... never had a second date with either.

Slips, Trips and Pratfalls...
Apart from my human bowling ball routine, I also regularly trip over ants...

Fell down a flight of stairs at Flinders Street Railway Station once... one step, and I bounced all the way down and was still hanging on to a suitcase and a shoulder bag when I hit the bottom... actually they were the cause of my, minor, injuries... a bump on the nose from the suitcase hitting me in the face all the way down and a twisted finger as my denim shoulderbag straps had twisted around my finger.

But the most uber-dorkish moment was arriving for a football match that MFL was playing in on a day when it had rained incessantly. Walked up to the car my godmother was sitting in, and did the big dramatic 'ta da' and went arse over tit in the mud. My godmother burst into laughter and the woman sitting in the drivers seat was asking 'where did she go...?' My beautiful new red chenille top was covered in cold, wet, sloppy mud.

But that wasn't the worst... luckily I was going to stay the weekend, so had a change of clothes in the car. Took my young godsister with me, while I changed in the car, she was supposed to play lookout and let me know if someone came along who could see. Got stripped down to my undies and changed and only then noticed the man sitting in the car parked in front, looking avidly into his rear view mirror. My godsister's response when I asked why had she not told me he was there... you said, tell me if someone comes along... he's been there all along!

There have been way too many examples of tripping both up and down stairs, or slipping on uneven floor surfaces too keep track... my knees and shins have callouses.

I'm not going to award a Uber-Dork award to anyone else... not sure if there is anyone else beamed down from my planet... but feel free to share your own uber-dork stories.

I will regard this great honor not so much as an award for what I have achieved, but a standard to hold against what I have yet to accomplish...

See I really couldn't sing, I could never really sing, what I couldn't do was... sing!

Today was first choir rehearsals, and I'm reminded of a conversation with a friend awhile back.

Frou Frou: Singing and dancing are like sex, you don't need to be good at it, to enjoy yourself.

Him: Yes, but the worse you are, the harder it is for others to enjoy themselves.

After today, all I can say is I MUST BE A DUD SHAG! Wildly enthusiastic, just 3 beats behind, sigh...

Seriously, had the bestest time, am still never going to be comfortable singing solo, I managed to hold my own in the group situation. Only difficult bit is a series of oh oh ah, oh oh ah, oh ahs, that reminded me of funk tap and my cross-eyed struggle to maintain the rhythm ... I was oh ahing when everyone else was oh ohing, and only got worse when the Choir Leader tried to help me.

Thursday Thirteen #7... the 13 Wants of V...

There are only two tragedies in life:
one is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it
Oscar Wilde

Well, I've played the "What Does V... need?" game, as have lots of others... but I was curious to see "What Does V... Want?" To play along, simply type "(your name) wants" into Google's search engine and be amazed, astonished and astounded...so without further ado, Ladies and Gentlemen, I bring you the 13 Wants of V...

One: V... wants to be fatally gorgeous... aren't I already?

Two: V... wants to be a duck... been there, done that... and have the feathered arse to prove it... A fatally gorgeous duck I was too... tap dancing on stage to Singing in the Rain... and no, you can't see the photos.

Three: V... wants to do gospel. She is the only person who can sing the telephone book in Swahili and make it sound good! ... um, yeah right, but I'll soon be able to tell you, as I start rehearsals next week for the Melbourne Millennium Chorus, and am fully expecting them to look at me kindly, while they offer me a full refund and show me politely to the door...

Four: V... wants to be great and to receive the love and applause of an adoring audience... singing quietly... I have confidence, in confidence alone... besides which you see, I have confidence in me... oh crap!

Five: V... wants to go out tomorrow night ... yeah, she does, and she is, have been invited to go eat Spanish food with some lovely lads and lassies from work ... (I know that sounds funny, scottish folk eating spanish food.. but I kid you not I am going to a Scots pub famous for its paella and sangria!)

Six: V... wants to write now... well, actually not right now, maybe later... am so tired... (oh, I've used that line before... but it was when someone asked for something else!)

Seven: V... wants to sleep now... see I told you...

Eight: V... wants to spend every day as if there was no tomorrow. Although Vikki may seem immature and childish she in fact is very wise, intelligent and caring... couldn't resist adding the following sentence... see, I iz all grown up, so pfft!

Nine: V... wants some men with big feet... well you know what they say about big feet! All the better to help me with item eleven! Though the plural men has got me worried... truly, just one man would do...

Ten: V... wants a hero to idolize and adore, someone to wholeheartedly admire and be proud of... with really, really big feet!

Eleven: V... wants risky sex... I think that means the sex where her mum says "I'm just going to get some milk" and you have to have REALLY fast sex on the kitchen table before she gets back... I swear, that was the actual following sentence... sex, sex, it all comes down to sex ...

Twelve: V... wants it all - love, sex, art, sex, life, passion, - all that plus the butterflies in the stomach feeling of a new romance! ... who me? Well, if you insist...

And finally... to end on a serious and cultured note:

Thirteen: V... wants her name changed to Tricksy McF@#ckalot ... I am speechless...

Destined to become an old lady with lots of cats...

Recently I joked around with the Nature Boy about wondering what people would think of a 40 something insomniac, who stays up half the night surfing the net, listening to music and dancing around in her pj's while she did the ironing ...

And on The Dog's Name I talked about how halfhearted I was about getting out there and meeting boys... winter... warm house...pc/tv/music... pj's...cuddly cats are way more appealing then strange men...frocking up...awkward conversation... disappointment. To which Indy replied 'Ah but if one of those strange men should prove to be perfect for cuddling up in said PJ's wouldn't it all be worth it?'...

Well of course it would, but seriously would you like to go out with this woman? And more importantly, would you want to dance with her?

How I was a Human Bowling Ball and lived to tell the tale...

This post is especially for Rhi, who wrote recently about her fall off stage while taking photographs and my alluding to my escapades on a cruise ship... and my utter klutziness!

Some back story about my nom de plume - in 1999, age 38 - I joined Miss Lou Lou's Tap Dancing Academy as an Absolute Beginner with a close friend. The last time I had had dance lessons was at the age of 6, learning ballet at a local ballet school for all of one term... but I enjoyed tap, particularly once I realised the more ridiculous our costumes and our song choices, the less likely people would actually pay attention to our less than fancy footwork.

At the time at work, one of the blokey blokes, started to refer to me as Miss Frou Frou, and I used it once or twice on an online group as I wrote about my faltering and hysterical and shortlived tapdancing career... and the term stuck! As did the reference to my friend as Miss La De Da!

And in 2003 I went away for a 10 day cruise to Noumea and Vanuatu with a group of 3 friends including Miss La De Da and Gigglegirl. The story below was written to that online group on my return...

The first night and day at sea was pretty rough, half the ship was suffering from sea sickness and yours truly ended up having a shot in the rear after waiting for 2 hours to see the ship's doctor and slept most of day one away.

First morning I slammed my thumb in the cabin door - but as that was also the period that I spent most of the time with my head in a paper bag I was too miserable to realise how much it hurt!

In the information we received from the cruise line before we left it said that they had two theme nights with passenger participation floorshows.

I said to Miss La De Da that maybe we should put our names down to do something. She was horrified and I said, why - it's not like we'll ever see these 1500 passengers again!

On the first night they asked for people to register interest in the two shows, one a Country and Western theme, the other Fright Night. I looked at MLDD and she said, no way, so I resigned myself to not participating.

When we got the daily news on that first night it said they were having linedancing classes the following morning. The 4 of us decided that would be fun to do. Well of course the following morning I was sick, so missed the line dancing class, and most of the first day.

So at dinner time when the girls woke me I was a bit disappointed to hear that MLDD and one of the others had signed up to do a linedancing routine in the Country and Western night, and despite the fact that MLDD thought she could teach me the dance, they hadn't put my name down.

Imagine my delight, when the next morning they had square dancing classes, and asked people to volunteer to do a different number in the show. Both MLDD and I had the class and put our names down.

What a hoot square dancing was. There were 4 groups of 8, with MLDD and I making up the 8 people directly at the front on stage right. The show room on the Pacific Sky is at the front of the boat, so it sometimes gets a bit rocky, so learning to do square dancing, and swinging and circling around was pretty tricky but we got the hang of it.

Now, of the two of us tap dancers, MLDD is by far the more accomplished. She has a great sense of style and dances well. I, on the other hand usually bumble along and generally look like an idiot. BUT, she has terrible trouble remembering a routine, while I, who has the memory of an elephant, pick routines up really quickly.

Square dancing was exactly the same. About a third of the way through the dance, after we'd do-si-do'd, we were supposed to do a heel, toe, heel, toe and gallop bit in the dance. MLDD routinely forgot what to do, so by the end of rehearsal as we do-si-do'd I'd quietly be saying, heel, toe, heel toe and gallop, we'd fumble a bit, giggle and pick it up.

The first of the two shows on performance night was the same. MLDD had a mental blank so right through the dance I kept having to either tell her what was next or point to where she needed to be. But we pulled it off and had a great time. Despite the fact that for some reason no-one ever assumes that just because you put your hand up to do something that you should have a body like Kylie - so the gingham shirt allocated to me - wouldn't do up it was so small - and the straw hat allocated was so big that I could hardly see!

So the 2nd show starts and we get organised to go on stage, still with me whispering to MLDD what comes first, and then next etc. It was a Beverley Hillbillies sketch, with the Pacific Sky entertainers dressed as various members of that family. During the dance they all weave in and out of the square dancers etc. Out we go, under the lights, a bit choppy weather, so we're all finding it a bit tricky staying upright - you just naturally all tilt in the direction that the ship is going.

Dancing away, giggling and being silly and then it happened. I'd said to MLDD through the do-si-do "heel, toe, heel, toe and gallop". She'd got a bit excited and was raring to go, and off she went, but unfortunately I wasn't quite ready, I'm heeling and toeing just as she started to gallop and disaster struck - I lost my footing and over I went.

Just as I did, the ship lurched, so not only did I have the pleasure of landing flat on my butt, but the momentum of the ship and MLDD's gallop had my legs going straight up in the air and I slid along the stage, almost taking out Grannie Clampett in the process, and causing some of the other people in our group of 8 to have to jump over me.

Talk about hysterical, the whole crowd including everyone on stage was laughing, as was I, except I couldn't get to my feet. I'm half lying on the stage floor, half bouncing up. Managed to get to my feet and jump straight back into the dancing, still with the sounds of everyone on stage laughing. MLDD was laughing so hard she wet her pants! And I wasn't that far behind her.

Once off stage one of the entertainers came over to check if I was ok. I wasn't, I'd actually landed pretty hard, and having to climb the stairs up to the dressing room was one of the hardest things I've ever done. But the show must go on, and when we all came out on stage at the end got a special clap from the audience.

The next two days saw me moaning and groaning every time I walked. Giant bruise on my right butt cheek, as well as across the top of my thighs. But dancing on the deck with most of the ship for 2 hours on Island night ironed out the kinks and I was ok.

Having survived the forgetting the steps on stage at the National Theatre 3 years earlier and making up a wildly interpretive dance that closely resembled a whirling dervish, all the time dressed as a gold tinselly sausage, I mean, showgirl, and now falling over on stage in front off close to 1000 people, I reckon I'm ready to take on anything. Jazz Ballet anyone?

Songs to Remember By...

On Wednesday night, following a recommendation from Jappa, 3 friends and I went to see the gala launch of the Choir of Hard Knocks at the Melbourne Town Hall, which was truly inspirational. They sang like angels, and we all found ourselves moved to tears and I'd heartily recommend you try to catch them if they come to your area.

I've realised that music is something that I can measure my life by, important and not so important moments, both good and bad times... there is usually some song that reflects that time or feelings, with songs capable of bringing back a time and place so vividly...

I love music, and love singing, though was told as a young girl in the school choir to sing 'quietly' i.e. mime, so was very self-conscious of singing for most of my life... and equally as self-conscious of dancing until I hit my 30s (would only dance when I was drunk before then and then I would dance on the tables!).

That doesn't stop music from being as vital as breathing to me... so here then are some of the songs that reflect me and my life...

Someday, One Day - The Seekers (people say your a dreamer, what do they know of what your thinking, if you believe in what your doing, then believe in what I say)- this creates the most vivid memory of first year at primary school, and being dropped off at a family friends house before school. I have never been much of a morning person, even as a little girl, so being bundled out of the house to go to a strangers home at the start of each day was a stress for me... but this song, which must have been in the charts at the time always seemed to be on the radio, and we got warm porridge and honey for breakfast ...yum...

Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime - Dean Martin - we had a turquoise VW beetle with a radio that didn't work, so car trips usually involved us kids sitting in the back singing songs to entertain my Dad. Invariably, he would warble this to us - but changing the lyrics to 'something in your kiss just told me, I've just kissed a cow!

Lullaby of Broadway - goodnight baby, goodnight, the milkman's on his way, sleep tight baby, sleep tight, let's call it a day
- my first dance lessons, in a local hall with the daughter of a neighbour, we did a dance routine to this song, a sort of tap/ ballet fusion... I was probably 6 and already completely uncoordinated and had such a miserable time of it that I didn't dance on stage again until I was 38!

Lipstick on Your Collar - Connie Francis - this is one for Miss La De Da - her and my sister age about 10, learning the lyrics and putting on a show for the family. For some reason this song also has the visual memory of MLDD masticating a banana sandwich with her mouth open... yuk!

Slipstream -Sherbet, Living in the 70's - Skyhooks, High Voltage - AC/DC, Hard Road - Stevie Wright - the soundtrack of my teens, the first 4 albums I bought when I got a part-time job in a lotto/record/gift store. My first concert, Festival Hall, Buster Brown with Angry Anderson on vocals, Skyhooks just as their first album was released and Sherbet!

Turn the Beat Around - Vicki Sue Robinson - 17 years old, Collingwood Districts Football Club Disco - at a hall in Carlton North every Saturday night, $3 for chicks, $8 for blokes, as most of the chicks brought their Asti Spumante, and they had a keg of beer for the boys. I drank beer with the usual result of being totally rat-assed by the end of the night. A gorgeous (think young Robert Redford) boy used to pounce on me most Saturdays, put my hand in the back pocket of his jeans, and dance close, telling all and sundry I was his wife... and then completely blank me if he saw me on the street during the week, only to repeat the whole routine the following Saturday... talk about being confused... He gave me my first (and probably only) illicit drug, telling me it would make me feel better, and then had to spend the night wrapped around me in the backseat of a car while I screamed and howled my way down from the trip from hell. He spread the word that anyone giving me anything stronger than beer was going to answer to him, and then blackened his mate's eye when mate shoved a bottle under my nose, saying sniff this!

Counting the Beat - The Swingers - my semi-punk days, short peroxide blonde hair, with jet black wispy bits stuck to my cheek, a multi-coloured bomber jacket, tight black skirt, one aqua stocking, one red, covered by fishnets... thought I was really cool, but never wore the outfit again after we walked into the pub one night to hear 'OK, we can start now, the circus has arrived'

Walking on the Moon - The Police - giant steps are what you take, walking on the moon, I hope my legs don't break, walking on the moon - first full-time job, living away from home for the first time in a share house with 2 chicks and a bloke in Richmond. The band stayed at the motel I worked at their first tour out, and we saw them play at Festival Hall...

Gonna Fly Now - The Theme from Rocky - aah, liniment, smelly socks and boys... football club rooms and the big difference between juniors and seniors is that seniors like to walk around naked... oh my... I don't like football... I like footballers!

Rhiannon - Fleetwood Mac - My First Love sang this to me the night we met... both slightly intoxicated, sleepily sitting on Gossy's mum's couch close to midnight after he'd played in the winning grand final for his local team. He sang this quietly into my ear while he stroked my hair and then he kissed me... **

No Lies - Noiseworks - one of my groupie stages++ (no sex though drats!)... sent the guys a bunch of balloons while they were recording their first album in Melbourne and came home to a gorgeous message on the machine from Jon Stevens. Meet them after a gig at the then Bell Street Rock one Easter, and they put my name on the door for every Melbourne gig for the next few years. Even got an invite up to Sydney for the filming of an MTV special when the album was released.

How Do I Live Without You - Trisha Yearwood, Easy - Faith No More, Throwing Cooper - Live - sitting on the swings at Fairfield Park at 3.00am talking to Angus Folly Boy on our first date, and his relief after about half an hour of debate in discovering yes, we did like some of the same music - he was a metal head, and I'm a musical theatre girl! I sprinkled these songs through mix tapes that I played at ten pin bowling and we'd make eye contact across a crowded bowling alley and smile at each other.

Big Spender - Sweet Charity
- so let me get right to the point, I don't pop my cork for every guy I see - finally putting the past and self-consciousness behind me and belting this out at karaoke at a work Christmas Party without worrying about what I sounded like... the fact that I was 12 kinds of pissed probably helped... but singing the love song duet with my boss at midnight was probably a bad move...

Would you...? - Touch and Go -I've noticed you around, I find you very attractive, would you, um, um, would you go to bed with me? - I laughed out loud (it was either that or cry) when this was playing on the radio after leaving Angus Folly Boy's house the ill-fated night he planned the big seduction scene. I arrived to find him almost crippled with back pain, which was bad enough, and then his brother deliberately came home to check me out, when he'd been told to stay away - add a malamute that went for the crotch snuggle every time she came into the room and his bedroom walls covered with photo's of naked women in poses only their gyno should see and is it any wonder I said there was no way I was going to get naaaaked!

The Healer - John Lee Hooker - first time I got my feet and brain to work in sync at Miss Lou Lou's Tap Dancing Academy, age 38! Heah ma, I can dance!%% Went on to dance at the National Theatre to The MilkShake - The Village People dressed as a cow, Tijuana Taxi by Herb Albert in sombrero and poncho and a fake moustache that kept falling off, as a gold tinselly sausage, I mean, showgirl to Madonna's Hanky Panky, and my swan-song - Singing in the Rain by Gene Kelly dressed as a duck!

** MFL is still the kisser against whom all other kissers are judged...

++ Wrote to bass player of MiSex once, and we started a telephone/ letter exchange for awhile - he'd ring when the band were down and we'd chat about music and stuff, and again, my name on the door at gigs, but I never actually met him...

%% Well, actually I can't really... why a girl who spends most of her time dancing from the waist up, lots of hand gestures, not a lot of foot work, ever took up tap is beyond me. The first time I ever persevered with something I suck at big time! It was fun, but after 5 years you were actually expected to be pretty good!!!
